Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Special Olympics Coach and a LEEP Program Volunteer?
Depending on what program you would like to volunteer with, there are different steps you must take. Special Olympic Coaches need to fill out a special application so our office can register you with Special Olympics Minnesota. Coaches are also trained through Special Olympics and must commit to traveling with the team for tournaments and supporting athletes at every practice.

LEEP Program Volunteers have a separate application, background check and orientation they must complete before volunteering with regularly scheduled programs such as Night Activities, Clubs, Teen Rec, and other events

Which volunteers need background checks, and how do I get one?

Every volunteer is required to have a background check completed before volunteering at LEEP. Special Olympics Coach background checks are included in their application and DO NOT need to complete a background check with the LEEP office. All other LEEP Program Volunteers must provide proof of a background check completed within the past 60 days (prior to your first volunteer shift).

What is orientation and do I need to go?
LEEP Program Volunteers need to attend a 1 hour orientation at LEEP. Orientations are by invite-only and are scheduled periodically throughout the year at LEEP based on our volunteer needs. The Outreach Coordinator will contact you after your initial application submission to invite you to an orientation.

How do I sign up for shifts?

You will receive information on signing up for shifts at Orientation. Special Olympics Coaches will be given a schedule prior to the sport-season of practice and tournament dates. LEEP Program Volunteers use an online application called SignUpGenius to register for each shift. It is password protected and allows you to schedule your own shifts at your convenience!
